About Chittagong Hill Tracts:

In Bangladesh, the Chittagong Hill Tracts is a different part of the country where the indigenous and tribal people have been the majority inhabitants since the 16th century. The uniqueness of the region is surrounded by forests, lakes, hilly terrains, and mountains and has a new dimension of its culture and ethnic diversity.

Eleven different indigenous and tribal ethnic groups have lived in this region since the 16th century and most are Buddhist. The people of this region have long been deprived of basic needs and appropriate development and human rights are absent. The total situation was exacerbated by political unrest, armed conflicts, race conflict, land occupation; abduction; displacement, and people transmigration were regular incidents in this region that you can find on the internet world if you just search out.

On 2nd December 1997, a peace accord was agreed between the Parbatya Chattagong Hill Tracts Janna Sanhati Samity (PCJSS) and the Government of Bangladesh. Because of this, the situation became favorable for reconstruction for development in this region and NGOs activities taking into account the demand of the local people.

In 1982, in the lead of a Noble Monk namely Ven. U Khemachara Mahathero with some well-wishers this charity organization was founded and the name was “Bangalhalia Agapara Buddhist Welfare Orphanage” (BABWO).

Why it has to be found? Ven. U Khemachara Mahathero, when he returned home from studying in Myanmar (Burma) in 1979 was struck by the poverty affliction of the people where he lives. One day, aimed to send two poor children, he went to a big orphanage in Chittagong but without acceptance of his request demonstrated negligence and disorder and he had to sleep a night on the ground floor in that orphanage.

He thought and questioned himself why do I have to rely on others, can’t I create an orphanage in my village? This is how the idea comes to him of creating an orphanage himself to provide better services for orphans and helpless children in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

He set up this orphanage for poor students in his home village in 1982. While him setting up this orphanage he did not have any resources to work with did not receive any support from the Government of Bangladesh and out of Bangladesh because of was out of a communication network.

Just three years ago the people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts entered into the mobile network. He runs this orphanage with little support from his villagers and cultivation the vegetables and rice in his parent-possessed lands.

In the beginning, there were 5 students, and gradually increased the number of students. At first, it was difficult to provide them with food, clothes, educational stationery, and preservation in this orphanage therefore he had to sell some gold taken lent from his mother in given word of reimbursement after getting enough but unfortunately he is still unable to reimburse his mother.

Only in 1990 did the local government of Bangladesh begin to provide some assistance to this charity organization and some national and international charity organizations too. But present directly and indirectly more than 120 orphan and disadvantaged children are getting opportunities from this organization.
